Poltrack Garden Update – June 19, 2014

I think a few years of working the soil has paid off. The tomatoes look nice and green.
Last year they were anemic in my failed attempt to grow them in 5 gallon buckets.
I also added some “Chicken Gold” compost purchased at Amazing Flower Farm here in New Ipswich.

This is the first year I’ve been somewhat successful with strawberries. Growing them in bins after wintering them over in the ground. This year I decided to use some straw as a mulch. Even with that, some of the ripe fruit has slug holes.
Maybe next year I’ll experiment with ringing them with copper wires.

I’m tired of kneeling to pick snap beans, so once again I’m going to try a climbing pole variety. This is the first year that I have used straw as a mulch but I’m sold. I purchased this at Mason Brook Nursery, another local business in nearby Mason, NH

Everybody should grow peonies, they are the perfect perennial. They die back in the winter, they are insect resistant, they live about 75 years and they are absolutely beautiful.
