Please help identify this gray bird (Cape Cod)

My friend John Morand saw this gray bird in Brewster on Cape Cod in an area that is primarily marshlands. I’m hoping the faithful readers of this blog can provide some help in identifying it. We had no luck with the bird guide books. Even Google let us down.

  1. Thanks John H, who responded via Facebook: “Looks like a Dumetella carolinensis or Gray Catbird “Catbird” pg 550 the Audubon Society Guide to NA birds (eastern), photo #420. Not normally that social with humans.”

I should have guessed that. We get a number of these catbirds, but I usually identify them by their distinctive catlike cry. I find ours to be quite social.
